So after what can only be described as an incredibly challenging 2011. Steph bounced back in 2012, stronger, fitter, more confident and what was most daunting for her fellow competitors, more determined. From the opening event of the season at the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast she served notice to everyone watching that the new and improved Stephanie Gilmore had one thing in mind, regaining the world title.

Her ability to enjoy a life away from surfing (and particularly competition) and then switch into a completely driven competitive machine for events, resulted in her winning a 5th world title at the Roxy Pro in France! Down on the surf coast this is the time of year when people go holiday crazy. The Streets are buzzing & there’s not a car park in sight! One of the things we love about January/February is the Night Jar market, it takes place ever Thursday 4-10pm.

The best time to go, when the air is balmy and the sea breeze has died down!

We took the Avalon Dress for a night out on the grassy knoll. Sipping on Sangria while enjoying a plate of MoMo’s (amazing Tibetan dumplings). Followed by a stroll through the stalls and art stands accompanied by music humming in the background, sending off the summer day with a soulful tune.

Not that Instagram isn’t the best thing to ever happen to us, but another interest we’d love to fuel in 2013? Taking more photos! Whether it’s hunting down Polaroid film from The Impossible Project, or getting traditional with 35mm, we can’t wait to document some adventures old-school style.

We love spending time in the water, and are ready to dive into something new. After seeing The Aqualillies perform at our New York The Bathers event, it might be time to enroll in a synchronized swimming class or two. Here’s to the best year yet!

Recently Steph featured in Australian Women’s Weekly to talk stockings, fruit & Christmas food coma’s!

Australian Women’s Weekly, Bryce Corbett - Champion surfer Steph Gilmore still looks forward to emptying her stocking each Christmas to discover a juicy mango hidden within.

“Every Christmas morning, after we had woken at the crack of dawn and raided our stockings, we would drive up the coast to Rainbow Bay, at Coolangatta, to meet our cousins,” says Stephanie. “Mum would always make rum balls. She never used to put so much rum in them – but she had upped the ante in recent years. Dad and I would spend most of the time checking the surf, wondering when it was polite to leave the party and go out and have a surf.”

Last weekend we had a visitor, our top Quiksilver Women’s ambassador Steph Gilmore!

Touching down in Melbourne, Victoria on Friday she made the drive down to pop in and say hello to the team at the Quiksilver head office! A handful of Steph’s biggest fans from the Quiksilver family sat down for a casual lunch with the x5 World Surfing champ to hear a few stories from the seasoned traveler.

Nothing like afternoon surfing in the sunshine, we all took to the beach after our feed. Some game enough to get in the freezing water and have a paddle with Steph. After some cheesy happy snaps with the girls, Steph said her farewell, off to freshen up then head back to the office for the Quiksilver Foundation Awaken the Spirit Art Auction.

On the Saturday the Quiksilver Foundation held their second annual Quiksilver Foundation World Champions Ball. Steph was an honorary guest along with some of the ‘old blokes’ like Tom Carroll & Ross Clarke-Jones getting into the Quiksilver spirit. Just this year I took a trip to the USA. With my best mate, sunscreen & collection of Quiksilver Women’s tees we set of on a – although short – journey of epic proportions!

In 3 weeks I ticked off several bucket list items including the following; Hollywood, Runyon Canyon, Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport, Las Vegas, Las Vegas pool parties, Cancun & the Mexican temples of Chitchen Itza! Phew!

There's no place quite like Vegas, we caught up with travelling friends to enjoy a day under the Cabana at the Marquee Club pool while listening to Pendulum play!

Colour blocking is not new to the fashion world; in fact you could say colour blocking was taken from way back, think 1940’s. Piet Mondrian (March 7, 1872 – February 1, 1944) whom was a Dutch painter famous for creating what he called Neo-Plasticism.

You may recognize similar paintings even today. (pictured above)

Putting a Quiksilver Women’s vintage twist on the already established colour blocking tees of today felt only natural. Along with a slight crop the Vintage Two Tone tee expresses neo-plasticism from the coastline, a little hip, a little punk, and a lot of attitude.

We were so stoked about the latest Quiksilver Women’s retail location in Newport Beach’s Fashion Island, we invited our closest friends and hosted a fabulous celebration to toast to our lovely new space. Our inventive buddy Chef Ludo (who we collaborated with on Chef And The Sea) was enlisted to prepare delightful bites for our guests. We had a blast listening to our talented friend Kevin Miso, warmly welcoming Quiksilver to Fashion Island over So Cal style acoustic jams.

Many of the guests were decked in Quiksilver finest. We’re especially digging how 90210 star Gillian Zinser wore our Sheer Tunnels dress open kimono-style with denim & booties for a layered cool ensemble.

The Quiksilver Women’s team toasts to a wonderful evening with Chef Ludo!

Along with our latest collections (as seen above being shopped by Fivel Stewart also in the Sheer Tunnels dress), the space will include from outside retailers like Ray-Ban sunglasses, Will Leather Goods and 31 Bits jewelry.

Also specific to Fashion Island is a special selection of clothing available to buy, with proceeds going to the Newport Bay Conservancy to conserve and restore local natural resources.

It was such a treat to truly toast to our new abode in classic coastal fashion

While browsing the outfits from the Cannes Film Festival 2012 red carpet, we spotted one Jada Pinkett Smith & Jessica Chastain from the movie Madagascar 3 donning polka dot dresses, needless to say we fell in love.

I’ve always had a soft spot for big fat or teeny tiny polka dot prints, especially on swimwear. No matter what the cut the polka dot always seems to flatter on the beach. An investment in the long run, this style of bikini has been made famous by the likes of Marilyn Monroe all the way through to 2012, as sported by Taylor Swift & Myleene Klass, below.

When our big brother Quiksilver heard that celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre would be hosting a pop-up restaurant in Hawaii featuring local flavors they brought in big wave charger and champion spearfisherman Mark Healey to catch the main ingredients.

As word spread about the project, fellow foodie and Quiksilver Women's Ambassador Steph Gilmore along with Pipeline charger Reef McIntosh jumped on-board giving Ludo a solid crew to accompany him around the Big Island’s North Kona Coast in search of Lobster, Crab, Uku and other local fish to be prepared, cooked and enjoyed.

Steph Gilmore recently caught up with Jason Crombie from Monster Children for an un orthodox interview.

No doubt most of you know that anything Monster Children puts out is going to be...different, quirky and sometimes, a little bit awkward! Just how we like it.

JC: What are you and Kelly going to name your super baby?

SG: Um…

JC: Alfonso.

SG: No. We’d call it something like Louise.

JC: So it’s a girl? Louise Slater Gilmore. Is that starting to gross you out?

SG: A little bit. He’s a good-looking man though; I think most women on the planet have had some sort of crush on Kelly Slater.

JC: Ah, okay. I’ll drop the subject…after this last question: What if Richard Branson wanted to buy your eggs and mix it Kelly’s junk and make a super surfer in his laboratory on the moon. How much would it cost him?

SG: Oh my god. You’re asking for a quote on my ovaries. Okay, so the baby would live in space?

JC: Who do you hate, like, who is your nemesis?

SG: ‘Who’s your nemesis?’ Come on.

JC: You’re a girl; girls always have that one chick who’s eyes they want to scratch out. What about that Sally Fitzgibbons?

JC: This is a serious question and it’s about sharks and ladies business. And anyone reading this thinking I’m being vulgar for cheap laughs can shut up, because I’m serious.

SG: Okay.

JC: Do menstrual cycles affect competitive surfing for women?

SG: What do you mean?

JC: You can’t swim when you’ve got your period.

SG: Of course you can! Who said you couldn’t?

THE STORY...

In the early 80s, the New Wave/Post Punk Rock genre collided with the rapidly emerging surf scene. Around this time, Quiksilver introduced Echo Beach to the world. Echo Beach quickly grabbed attention for its brash, geometrically printed boardshorts that captured the spirit of what was going on both in and out of the water.

Original Quiksilver artist Simon Buttonshaw takes up the story: “One day Quiksilver Founder Alan Green brought in a bunch of photos of jockeys in racing silks and said, why can’t we do something like this?” The idea may have stemmed from the racecourse but it was also a response to the bold new glam-punk look of bands at the time – particularly the outrageous geometric & harlequin patterned stage costumes of David Byrne (Talking Heads) & the Finn brothers (Split Enz). Quiksilver’s stroke of genius was to take this iconic look to the beach.

Although despised by retailers when it was delivered in place of standard floral prints in the summer of 1980, Echo Beach instantly struck a chord with the young crew and has been reprised for every generation since.

So here we are, some three decades on. And what better way to shake things up over summer than to introduce Echo Beach into the Quiksilver Womens swimwear line. 3 original Echo Beach prints - including the Iconic star print – are now available in Quiksilver’s classic string bikini and the soon to be famous Bashers Underwire. It’s the ideal way to put some energy & attitude into the beach.

Yes we've just opened the NEW Quiksilver Women's store! Located in the Jungceylon mall in Phuket, Thailand.

The store opening took place during the Quiksilver Open in Phuket at Patong beach, located just 2km from the store and right in the heart of Phuket's busiest tourist area!

Steph Gilmore came to visit and spent her first few days in Phuket site seeing some of the beautiful islands of Thailand. Popping in a surf when she could before diving into 2 full days of media commitments with the team. Hosting over 140 media partners, the event in Thailand grew considerable momentum! Steph was a trooper!

The store was officially opened on a Friday night, with many guests attending such as our Quiksilver Thailand Manager and the South East Asia CEO, even the Jungceylon Mall Owner dropped in to celebrate. After an hour spent in interviews at the new store Steph went on to join the celebrations at the Quiksilver Women’s party!

The party started with a fashion parade and ended with Steph being interviewed by one of Thailand's top TV identities, the crowd was ecstatic being that this was the first time an international athlete from Quiksilver had come to their shores!

To finish off her visit, Steph managed a few more interviews and a paddle with some of Thailand's favourite celebrities!

Fernwood Fitness, 30/08/12 - Since the age of 17, Stephanie Gilmore has chased the best waves to some of the world’s most exotic locations. Fernwood caught up with the five-time world surfing champion to talk touring, training and tan lines.

Which nation has the hottest beach bodies?

The Frenchies do it pretty well. They seem to be uninhibited – everyone’s topless and in small bikinis. Because they look confident and comfortable, they also look sexy. And an even complexion with no tan lines helps any outfit.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Never underestimate yourself.

Apart from surfing, how do you keep fit?

I’ve been training using the CHEK (Corrective, Holistic, Exercise, Kinesiology) principles for about six years now. CHEK is about strengthening your core as the centre focus and working to maintain postural balance and strength. I use a lot of my own body resistance and work with the Swiss ball to activate muscles you would have never known existed, and my program has been specifically designed to mimic motions I perform while surfing. It’s also about connecting with the mind to control your body and its reactions.

It would be an understatement to say I enjoy the common cacti. I have them in my bedroom, my lounge room and my backyard. I find them fascinating plants, resilient, colourful, prickly, furry, easy and i have found out, very useful.

On my recent trip to Mexico I was able to talk with a local from Villadolid. His little store teaming with souvenirs made from the humble cactus plant.

Items such as clothes, mats, bags, baskets, sandals, rope, twine, bracelets, musical instruments, saddle pads, blankets and even paper where made from the cacti. Before western society travelled over the border from the US, the native’s relied on Cacti for wine and even shampoo!

I was lucky enough to try Cactus salad, though after the first mouthful, I didn’t feel so lucky. A texture like seaweed meets the common slug, I was quite happy to refrain from eating my prickly friends ever again!

John Moore and his team in the US, also inspired by the beautiful shape of a succulent, injected the print into these styles from our Summer 12 range.

Ms Gillard, whose official Twitter account has more than 250,000 followers and who signs off her personal tweets JG, and her Director of Communications, John McTernan, attended the Twitter-organised luncheon gathering of Australia’s top social media influencers under the age of 30.

In attendance were three twentysomething Australians with more than 100,000 Twitter followers – Wallabies back James O’Connor, video blogger Natalie Tran and media personality Ruby Rose.

Also there were web entrepreneur William Chen, Hollywood actor Lincoln Lewis, beauty queen Jesinta Campbell, television presenter Lauren Phillips and many famous names from sport, including Olympic gold medallists Matthew Mitcham and Stephanie Rice, world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore, Wallabies winger Drew Mitchell and NRL superstars Robbie Farah and Jarryd Hayne.

Host Tom Waterhouse said that he was proud of how young Australians were embracing technology, using social media to develop their brands and communicate with previously unreachable audiences.

“They’re the leaders of our generation on social media. They influence TV networks, newspapers, fashion and the views of the nation. They enjoy interacting with their fans who, prior to the advent of such services were almost impossible to reach, and pushing worthy causes, all at the same time as creating a valuable asset for themselves,” said Tom.

“Everyone in Australia from the Prime Minister down recognises the importance of using social networks and investing in technology because we’re on the verge of a truly amazing time.”

Last week we jetted off to New York to celebrate the launch of our #TravelingSweater campaign – and the start of Sweater Weather, of course! We toasted to #TravelingSweater with the Sip and Stitch at the charming West Village haunt, Little Owl The Venue.

As far back as I can remember denim shorts were always on the top of my pile for the hottest days in summer! Fashion first fell in love with Nautical Stripes in 1846, when Queen Victoria dressed her four-year-old son, Albert Edward, in a sailor suit to wear aboard the Royal Yacht.

Jump forward to the life & times of Coco Chanel, the first fashion icon to bring the nautical look into the world of high fashion. Coco opened her first boutique in Deauville, France, in 1914, with sailor blouses, wide-legged pants, striped knit tops and straw boaters. Ever since, the nautical stripe has been as constant as the changing tides!

Steph Gilmore won her 5th ASP World Surfing Title almost three weeks ago in France. Still embracing the high of her amazing achievement, Steph took to the water last night to cruise through her first round at the Nike US Open of Surfing!

Tuesday July 31, 2012. Nike US Open of Surfing, Huntington Beach, California, USA.

The Nike US Open of Surfing is the final stop on the 2012 ASP Womens World Championship Tour Calendar. The event will be webcast live via www.usopenofsurfing.com.

THE STORY

Back in the mid 70’s, Johnny Hawkins’(ex Quiksilver rep) mum, Linda worked as a seamstress in the original board short factory in Torquay.

She also happened to be good friends with co founders of Quiksilver, Alan and Barb Green.

When working, rather than throwing away the off cuts from all the board shorts Linda collected them with the intent to make large quilts.

Committed to the idea, she had painstakingly sewn hundreds of individual fabric squares together. Now 40 years on, though a little worn and well loved, the quilts are still used by the Hawkins family today.

After chasing him down, we asked Johnny to bring in the much talked about quilts. Instantly, we knew we had to do something with them! Wrapped carefully as hand luggage the quilts were taken to our global design centre in Huntington Beach, California, for the creative team to get busy.

Now safely back in the hands of the Hawkins family, thanks to the inspiration of these amazing quilts. We now have the Bells Beach Cami, Bells Beach Maxi & Swim. Full, of Quiksilver Heritage inspired prints!

Today, Steph Gilmore inspires us. With an understated uber cool approach to fashion, Steph executes an all white ensemble without looking brash! Subtle details like the embroidered blue throughout this Native Square Shirt and her own Lapis Lazuli ring add touches of the ocean to her crisp outfit.

We have teamed the shirt with the soft washed Breezer denim short to give it a more casual feel. Not sure about you, but we can't wait for spring!

Here are a couple of shots from a recent trip to Rio De Janeiro, for our 5th stop on the ASP world tour.

Rio is one of the most beautiful places in the whole world! Every human must go on a trip to Rio for a Brazilian cultural experience.

I ended up coming 5th in the event, which I was pretty disappointed with but things like that are forgotten quickly when you get to travel around and see the beautiful sights of another country.

This first shot is from a beach called Arproador, where the contest was held for a few days to begin. On the other end of the beach you can see the favelas (slums) that are built along the side of the hill, which really makes for a contrasting subject next to the wealthy hotels on the beach.

Coco Ho and her Dad Michael. Hawaiian surfing royalty!! Coco won the Nikon expression session at the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in Sydney and was telling me how excited she was to be shooting her travels with her prize, the AW100.

This is a beautiful sunset one afternoon at Barra da Tijuca, where I stayed for the event. One of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen! Brazil is so colourful, and has such a wonderful character, I can’t wait to return.

COTE DES BASQUES, Biarritz/France (Tuesday, July 10, 2012) – The world’s best female surfers have congregated in the south of France this week for Event No. 6 of 7 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Roxy Pro Biarritz, taking place from July 10 – 14, 2012. The penultimate event on this year’s elite ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Roxy Pro Biarritz will play a vital role in both the determination of the 2012 ASP Women’s World Champion and the requalification campaigns of the world’s best female surfers.

Stephanie Gilmore, 24, four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current ASP Women’s World No. 1, has had a banner year in 2012, collecting two elite tour wins and placing in the Quarterfinals or better in each event thus far. While Gilmore has a chance to clinch the 2012 ASP Title in Biarritz, the young natural-footer is cautiously optimistic when discussing the possibility.

“I haven’t spent much time thinking about the end results as I feel you start to lose focus on what you actually need to do when you start that,” Gilmore said. “Obviously, though, the emotions are warm.”

In closest contention to Gilmore’s 2012 ASP Title campaign is compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21. “Sally (Fitzgibbons) is an incredible athlete, a wonderful surfer and she’s driven to succeed,” Gilmore said. “You can never underestimate her or any of the girls for that matter.” As defending Roxy Pro Biarritz winner, Gilmore’s affinity with the French beachbreaks will be a major advantage heading into this week’s competition. “I adore France and always seem to feel at home there,” Gilmore said. “We had some nice waves in the last year’s event and although the summer in Europe is not the best time for waves, there always seems to be something fun to compete in. I’ve been surfing on some new shapes from DHD, smaller and a bit wider in different points than my usual, to try and suit the waves in France and Huntington.” Gilmore has drawn Paige Hareb (NZL), 22, and Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 32, in Round 1 of the Roxy Pro Biarritz.

Stephanie Gilmore today took home her 5th ASP World Title on the shores of Grand Plage. Amid sunny skies and 3-4 foot waves, Stephanie was all smiles as she beat out Tyler Wright and staked her claim as the 2012 Surfing World Champion. The quest for the world title was no easy feat this year, as competition was fierce and the battle for the crown was a result of pure determination and passion for the sport that Stephanie loves.

THE STORY

Steph Gilmore arrived back from a recent trip to Bali with a pair of leather shorts that she had made for herself. Hoping to make them a little more Quiksilver, Steph asked if we could supply her with buttons & labels to finish the pair off.

This got Steph & the team to talking about how cool it would be to make the leather shorts even more special with an original printed pocket from Quiksilvers Archives and share the love with a few special people!

Sifting through swatches of Original Quiksilver and Hoffman print’s there were just too many to choose from.

Steph had to settled for her favourite 24, a few Hoffman prints and others Iconic to Quiksilvers Heritage. One print for each pair of leather shorts.

So heres what happened: Ryan Keen , Dan Dare, Billy Battenburg, Bena Woods and myself made our way from Rectory road in London on sunday.... all the way to the south of France.

(we are all working on new stuff at the moment...and we've all been working together in one way or another...and Quiksilver have built the most incredible studio in their European Head Office so we thought we should all go over... write some tunes ...and have some fun.....and BY GUM DID WE !!! )

And what a brilliant journey it was (did not feel like 10 hours at all ).... Bena was helping me learn my theory ( I'm learning to drive dont you know )

Dan was spicing it up in the front with cheif driver Ryan Keen and Tobes was just being Tobes:) .... and on the way there... we got on this train car train.... it was a train that had loads of cars on it.... and it took us to France , WELL...i was just simply amazed. technology these days. incredible ..... and the before you know it..... we're in France. Rocked up at this really futuristic service station..... it really was quite fantastic ..infact... it was that amazing... Ryan took his shirt off and bought an ice lolly.

Then before you know it.... after hours of laughing and listening to his song over n over again... we arrive at the Boardriders house in hossegor. We are all pretty tired at this point but buzzin to be there,and then to make it even better... the lovely Emily Woods arrives!

So we unload some stuff out of the van, show everybody to their rooms... and just then... sit down:then little Ryan Keen comes over... and tells us that he has locked his keys in the boot of the car!!!i'm not gonna go into detail about how difficult this made his life for 2 days... but ... let me just say....it was a bit of a blag.

Top 'n bottom of it though is... he managed to get the keys... and a new windscreen.

Anyway....so after that massive hiccup... we all decided to get some gin and tonics... and have a jam in the Quiksilver house library. so much fun and laughs. The next day... we make our way to the studio.... and for the next 4 days.....we all had the best time.... making music together /on our own .I'm finding it quite hard to write down how much of a great time we had.... because it was that good... and plus... I'm so bad at writing blogs!

always say this when I go to hossegor...but i really do think it was my favorite time there.... just because I was making music in one of my favorite places in the world ... and I'm so proud of the song that came out of it .... I'm gonna stop typing now cos .... im just blabbing on.so im just gonna post some pictures up of me and my friends having a really good time.

So this is officially my first post on Quiksilver’s new women’s blog (US) and I have been trying to figure out where to begin. Firstly, it’s a crazy honor to be here. I feel like a kid in a candy store or a grom at a surf comp… I’ve literally grown up my entire life captivated by the athletes, images, events, surf stories, legends and lore that is Quiksilver and now I get to be on the same site as Stephanie Gilmore, Kelly Slater and Dane Reynolds. I get to hear stories from legends like Simon Buttonshaw and Lisa Anderson and it’s all in the name of inspiration and creativity. Honestly, I keep pinching myself ‘cause it seems too good to be true. So where to begin??? How ‘bout the earliest boardshort in the Quiksilver archives…

Check out this yellow boardie that was handed to me on day one. It predates the Mountain & Wave logo that we all know today. I have heard a few different stories as to where the “Original Creations” Swan (or duck, or birdie) came from, but let’s just say that the entire design team fell in love with the spirit of this original boardshort and you’ll see the swan turn up in different ways throughout the collection.

Our last afternoon in the village was a trip down to the local hospital (if you can even call it that). The place was in desperate need of even the most basic tools and medicinal instruments if there is to be any professional medical care for the village. I seriously had some nightmares of re-visiting the hospital rooms as a sick patient and it was so apparent that if there were to be any complications with the birth of a child or if someone young contracted Malaria, then there really is the smallest chance of survival. I think this scene really pulled the heart strings of us all in the Quiksilver Foundation team and so we decided to make our next project to be the rejuvenation of the hospital.

Sure there are plenty of great American Surfers to root for, but Outside Magazine (and us) prefer to break the rules a bit this Summer and cheer on our favorite Aussie, Stephanie Gilmore. In the June issue of Outside Mag Steph talks about how she overcame some of her biggest challenges in the past few years and what the future has in store for her.

“This year, I’m fresh and feeling extremely competitive. I’m a new me.”

While we love the old Steph too, we are stoked to see what she has in store for us this Summer!

Four-time surfing world champion Stephanie Gilmore is coming off her worst year ever. In fact, 2011 was the first year since the Australian turned pro in 2006 that she didn’t win the title.

“I wasn’t at my best,” Gilmore admits. “I was never able to focus on the job at hand.” That’s understandable, considering that in December 2010, only two weeks after her fourth-straight title, the 24-year-old was viciously assaulted outside her Coolangatta, New South Wales, apartment. The alleged assailant—a homeless drifter who may have been randomly stalking her and who finally goes on trial this June—bashed her with a metal bar, gashing open the back of her head and breaking her left wrist.

Doctors wouldn’t let her surf for eight weeks, and when she did enter the water, she didn’t have the same paddling strength in her left arm. Really, though, it was the emotional toll that set her back. “After doing so many interviews and having to answer so many questions about it, I tended to brush it off,” says Gilmore. “I never expected it to affect my competitive performance as much as it did.” She ended the year ranked a disappointing third, behind fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons and American Carissa Moore, the eventual champ.

This February, however, Gilmore won the Roxy Gold Coast Pro in convincing fashion, cementing her position once again as the woman to beat. Sadly, she’s hitting her stride just as the women’s tour is on the ropes. In 2011, Vans, Reef, and Billabong, along with a host of smaller sponsors, let their support of women’s surfing flag, and the tour was cut short for financial reasons before the women headed to Hawaii for the Triple Crown, which had been held on the North Shore every year since 1997.

This season the tour is still scheduled to end before Hawaii. And with Gilmore back on top, competition will be fiercer than ever. In July, she competes at the Roxy Pro in Biarritz, France. “I really enjoyed watching Carissa and Sally compete last year,” says Gilmore. Just don’t expect another two-way race. “In 2011, I was running on adrenaline and emotion,” she says. “This year, I’m fresh and feeling extremely competitive. I’m a new me.” - Outside Mag

Time to get in the field and really get to work. The sun is extremely hot during the middle of the day so we had to wait for the later afternoon before we could really get our hands in the field. Handing out the young trees to the families was truly a highlight of the trip.

To see the joy and the fulfillment each person showed in their genuine eyes when they were given a tree was such a wonderful feeling!

To see how valuable even just one fruit tree is to an entire village was exactly the purpose of this project and trip.

After a surprising loss in the Round 1 Heat, Steph has come back with guns blazing! Posting the highest score of the day at 16.70 out of 20, for the Round 2 Heats!

Thursday, May 10, 2012 Caption: The Billabong Rio Pro returned to the lefthanders of Arpoador to complete Round 2 of women’s competition in challenging one-to-three foot (0.5 metre) waves. Event No. 5 of 7 on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Billabong Rio Pro made the most of the conditions on offer today, completing the elimination Round 2 and setting up for a finish by the final day on the waiting period this Sunday. Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current frontrunner, commanded her Round 2 bout against replacement surfer Melanie Bartels (HAW), 30, earning one of the day’s highest single-wave scores of 8.50 out of 10 en route to the day’s highest heat total of 16.70 out of 20 with fluid backhand surfing.

“I was pretty worried going into that heat because the waves were just so minimal,” Gilmore said. “Performance-wise, when it’s inconsistent and very hard to surf, there are so many things going through your mind. It was really nerve-wracking, especially going against Mel Bartels, she’s one of my favorite surfers and I was nervous.”

Gilmore, who suffered a surprising Round 1 loss to wildcard Alessa Quizon (HAW), 18, yesterday, admitted that the combination of jet lag and the tight takeoff zone of Arpoador provided additional challenges yesterday, but the phenomenal natural-footer has regained focus for the future rounds.

The Surfrider Foundation announced this week that World Champion surfers Kelly Slater and Stephanie Gilmore have signed on to be this year's International Surfing Day Ambassadors. Observed globally on June 20th International Surfing Day celebrates the sport of surfing and helps raise awareness about issues facing our oceans, waves and beaches.

At 24 years old, Australian native Stephanie Gilmore has already become one of the most accomplished surfers in the world. She's won four consecutive ASP Women's World titles, and still remains the only surfer to take the title during her rookie year. Like Kelly, Stephanie also holds a Laureus Award for her groundbreaking achievements in women's professional surfing. Since coming into the women's professional surfing scene, Stephanie has received an ESPY for Female Action Sports Person of the Year, three Hawaiian Triple Crown victories, two Surfer Poll Awards and 19 Elite Tour Victories. When she's out of the water, Stephanie can be found strumming her guitar and snapping photos of her world travels.

Today we taught the locals how to extract the oils from eucalyptus leaves and use it for medicinal purposes. This was done with a giant alembic. 30 kilograms of leaves makes only 150ml of oil. This process is also great to create essential oils that can be used in beauty products like body butter and moisturizer. I think their dry African skin loved it!

So to be there with the Quiksilver Foundation with a mission to educate and help create a sustainable life for these beautiful people in Anambe, I was feeling pretty warm and fuzzy!

Whats your favourite food?
I love making Quinoa salads, adding everything I can find in the fridge and chopping it all up in different ways. Lately, I’ve been shaving my veggies.

Do you have a food philosophy?
Listen to your body, how it reacts to different foods, and know that while food is fuel a piece of chocolate cake every now and then is good for the soul.

What’s you guilty food pleasure?
When my mum makes a chocolate pudding. I add a dollop of fresh cream. It’s impossible to resist.

Is there any kind of exercises you hate?
Squats on the Swiss ball. I also don’t enjoy running much.

What do you do for fitness?
I surf twice a day if there are waves.

Favourite healthy snack?
Blending watermelon and blueberries with almond milk and ice.

What makes you feel body confident?
Feeling light. That comes from eating fresh foods and working on a fast metabolism by snacking regularily. Whenever your craving something sweet your most likely dehydrated – so drink water instead.

What’s your favourite way to spend days off?
I love hanging at home with my friends. We put music on, drink coffee, chat and walk to the beach for a late surf.

What’s your beauty secret?
Vitamin D, hydration, slow breathing and doing things that make me happy!

Bandia Nature Reserve

Our trip guide, and great new friend, who looked after the Water Guardians project, had some extra stops planned into the schedule. First stop was a trip to see my relatives (the Giraffes) in an animal park. This particular park was in an area that was full of the extremely cool Baobab tree. A tree that could house you and feed you. A truly amazing tree and so wonderful to have it everywhere in a country that has a lot of vacant area and people who don’t have anything but the Baobab gives them so much.

To see a giraffe in the wild with the zebras just hanging out in their African homes was maybe the coolest thing ever! My favorite thing so far. The giraffe, so tall and graceful… The patterns of their coat is so magnificent it could only be created by something as clever as nature. The zebra is also placid and baffling to see with the naked eye.

The rhino is not so pretty but to see this animal in person may be the only way to grasp the power and strength of these animals. I would try to sneak a zebra back home in my bag, but I’m not sure I would succeed.

I would love to walk down the street of my home town with my pet Giraffe….

Charlotte O'Connor is set to release her debut album 'For Kenny' on March 26th 2012. Charlotte may be young and beautiful, but it is with her carefully crafted songs (a mix of acoustic folk and soul), her mesmerizing soulful voice, and her cheeky Lancashire sense of humour that she has been charming her audiences across the globe. "The album is called 'For Kenny' in honor of my invisible friend I had when I was a kid -- a mouse called Kenny. When I was younger I was always breaking things by mistake, and blaming Kenny. I still blame him for things now if I misbehave. It's always Kenny's fault. I owe that mouse a lot, which is why the whole album is dedicated to him."

After a big local lunch at the most western point in Africa, we headed out to Ngor where we tasted what would be our main choice of meal for the next four days: The local fish “Tiof” (tee-off).

We have been getting so spoiled on this trip with all delicious food that I will be happy to actually go and do some physical work. Today I will be training with the Senegalese wrestlers.

Quiksilver woman ambassador Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, has won the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival in clean three foot (1.5 meters) surf over Carissa Moore (HAW) at Taranaki, New Zealand last night.

Stop No. 3 of 7 on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival offers vital points in the race for the ASP Women’s World Title. This year the event scored the best waves and also witnessed the biggest performances in its three year history, with classic waves on offer for the duration of the competition.

Gilmore, four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current ASP Women’s World No. 1, finished 9th at the TSB Bank New Zealand Surf Festival both in 2011 and 2010, but today took top honours in an exciting Final. Gilmore and Moore were extremely evenly matched opponents, with both surfers trading excellent scores, going back and forth, finishing the 35 minute duel separated by only 0.70.

“This is by far the best start to a season I’ve had in my career,” Gilmore said. “To have three Finals straight off the bat, I’m kind of tripping out. It’s really cool. That was a really close Final, I’m sure it could have gone either way.”

Next ASP Women’s World Tour stop will take place in Dee Why in Australia from April 18th to April 23rd.

The 51st Bells Beach Classic 2012 arrived in our sleepy town of Torquay. In what was suppose to be the beginning of frosty Winter mornings and biting cold winds, instead the sun decided to grace our rugged southern coast with one last time!

We made the treck along the cliffs and bush to walk out into a firing Winki & Bells, feeling the buzz of the Easter weekend crowds to cheer on our Steph Gilmore.

The word was out that our ‘perfect 10 wave’ ambassador Steph was going to be in store Saturday afternoon. Soon enough the crowds gathered and the line was out the door. Steph, with her larger than life smile making everyone stoked to be apart of the Quiksilver Women’s Family.

Our very own Stephanie Gilmore stars in the latest all-Australian ‘I AM’ ad for Nikon.

Nikon has released the latest installment of its ‘I AM’ campaign featuring our very own brand ambassador and 4 x surfing world champion Stephanie Gilmore as the face of their new shock proof, waterproof and freezeproof’ camera, the COOLPIX AW100.

The ad was directed by Anthony Rose through Flying Fish. The music track, ‘Welcome Home’, is by American band Radical Face.

It’s always fun to do a DIY project every now and then.. and distressing denim is an easy project that anyone can do.

I was inspired by these worn in and tattered boyfriend jeans, and thought I try to re-create my own version. Here’s my step by step process.

First I found a pair of oversized jeans.

Then get the tools needed… fabric scissors, an x-acto knife, and a cutting board.

To get the cropped look, decide wear you want the jeans to fall and cut off the bottoms.

Then start making the cuts wear you want them. Pair them together in the shapes that you want them to shred.

Once you have the cuts all over the jeans and you are ready to go.. throw them in the wash. After one wash you should have the right amount of distressing.. and and wear and wash will just make them better.

Then style up your look and head outdoors.

The ladies from the US hit our shores to suss out the Melbourne music scene, sounds like they enjoyed themselves!

While we’re still braving winter temperatures in the states, summer is in full swing “down under.” And what goes better with long sunny days than music festivals? I got an early taste of summer a few weeks ago at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival in Melbourne, which takes place in seven cities over a two week period, and spotlights several of the artists (like Feist and M83) we’ll be anticipating at our own upcoming Coachella Music Festival Almost (if not more so!) important than the music at most festivals are the fashions, and Melbourne, known for its creativity, did not disappoint!

Vintage was the word of the day as girls and guys alike flaunted their best pre-loved wears. Hats of all shapes and sizes made a splash while also protecting festival-goers heads from the hot Australian sun. For the ladies, super short, high-waisted denim shorts were popular, as were printed girly dresses cinched with belts at the waist. Strappy sandals of all hues and materials jazzed up outfits while ankle high boots added a touch of boyish charm to breezy summer frocks. Classic wayfarers still ruled the day, but oversized cat-eyed sunnies also came out to play.

There’s nothing like a day spent outdoors alongside happy people and good music to get you in the summer spirit. Next stop: Coachella!

The first morning we just cruised and found our bearings. We met the hotel’s pets, a pinkish pelican, some crazy cats and a lovely dog.

Straight out the front of the hotel is NGOR Island, which has some prime real estate and two fairly decent waves breaking along each side. We surfed the right, which was pretty decent. Some strange rocks throughout each wave but interesting all the same.

We surfed with one local guy who was actually really good. He impressed us all with his athleticism on a board. It was too windy for the next few days of surf so this was the only water time we got. I don’t mind not surfing, especially when you’re in a new country with an abundance of adventures to come.

On January 18th, Alain Riou (Pro Surfer) & Tom Frager (singer) and myself embarked on a journey that would change our lives, or at least our way to look at it.

For the past 2 years, the association Cœur de Forêt has worked to develop a successful economic model in the Anambe (Senegal) thanks to the support of the Quiksilver Foundation via the funds raised during the « Green Campaign ». Our mission was to meet the locals and see on site how the village has evolved since the arrival of Cœur de Forêt.

Traveling around the world for a reason other than chasing waves was definitely something different and getting involved with the people there who don't have much but still manage to be incredibly happy was pretty eye-opening. I guess revelations like this aren't exactly uncommon, but actually experiencing it firsthand is something that has re-shaped my outlook quite a lot. I felt i needed to share this… so here's my little diary…

The surf guide was tying our boards to the roof and it looked very questionable… So I turned to Alain and said: "That aint right". Hoping he would say something to the guy in French, but he just smiled and said "T.I.A", "it will be ok This Is Africa".

Serena Mitnik-Miller is an artist, designer, photographer, and curator living and working in the Outer-Sunset district of San Francisco, California. Serena combines her time painting, designing, collecting, and supporting her local artisan community. She is artistic by nature, treating every occasion as a creative pursuit with imagination and resourcefulness. She also creates original artwork for her collaboration with the Quiksilver design team and inspires much of their work.

QSW Spring 2013. My general store- its nice to have something be your own and make it different, it makes people come back. I am always working on personal art projects for different things or for myself. I just did a book cover for a Japanese writer, so that was something new and exciting.

Anything water related. I love to surf and scuba dive. I also like painting and being creative. Being active and creative on whatever it is. This can be very hard to define.

24 year old Stephanie, who was born and raised in New South Wales, Australia, has already become one of the most accomplished surfers in the world. There were two: Yeah Yeah Yeah’s New Years Eve at Falls Festival in Australia. Karen O really painted a colorful performance, my friends and I were going crazy front and center. I also really loved a Dick Dale concert I went to in California... he is the originator of surf guitar genre and the riffs they use in old surf films (or more famously, Pulp Fiction). Iconic and so impressive.

Where is the most fun wave you've ever surfed?

P-Pass in Micronesia is where I’ve had the most exhilarating waves. Mainland Mexico was the most fun.

Whats is your favorite city in the world?

New York City or Biarritz, France.

Who is your fashion icon?

 So many! Kate Moss, Gaga, Alexa Chung, Issey Miyake, Cate Blanchett, Blake Lively, Marion Cottillard’s character in Midnight in Paris.

Unlike anything I’d ever experienced. I love the alpine life.

How did the Water Dancer project change your perspective on surfing/dancing?

It didn’t change my perspective on surfing. It let me express the way I’ve always observed female surfing. But it really opened my eyes to the parallels of body movement, choreography, feeling and performance between riding waves and dancing. Perhaps dancing is moving the body to ride waves of sound.

As one of the leading ladies of the Australian DJ scene and winner of the Australian She Can DJ Competition. Rachel Phillips (nicknamed Minx) has been breaking down walls since she started spinning in 2004. A lover of dance and music since day one, she practiced spinning for fun in her local club before it opened. Soon after, she started playing sets around town and two years later, she signed with powerhouse promoters OneLove, who took her on as their first ever female resident. Minx has since opened for the likes of Deadmau5, Ajax, and Bart B More, moving on to big global names such as Avicii & Tiesto! She has already played at many major music festivals including Good Vibrations, Future Music Festival, We Love Sounds, Parklife, V Festival and Stereosonic Festival every year since its opening in 2007.

I am currently 1/4 of the way through my Australian compilation album tour. I have also just released 2 tracks, so I have been doing a lot of promotion for them.

If you could have one wish what would it be and why?
TI am very content at the moment, no wishes needed!

Favorite Past time:
Having a glass of wine and a good old gossip session with my friends.

If you weren't doing what you were doing now, what would you be doing?
I can't see myself doing anything else, so pass!
